Background and objective: Mental disorders are more prevalent in modern societies and among them depression is one of the most common disorders particularly among young people. This study was done to determine the relationship betweenattitude and practice toward prayer and depression in students of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences. methods: This is a descriptive - analytic study. The study sample consisted of 400 students of Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences who were selected through stratified random sampling method. The data were collected by 2 questionnaires, one that contained questions related to attitude and practice toward prayer and another wasBeck depression test. Results: 37.5% of students had depression (mild to severe). 71% had positive attitude and 29.5% had good practicetoward prayer. There was significant relationship between attitude toward prayer and lack of depression (p=0.03), so that depression average ranking was lower in those who had positive attitude toward prayer. With higher mean scores of practice toward prayer depression rates were lower but the difference was not significant. Conclusion: The depression rate is high among students. Prayer shows promising results in decreasing the prevalence and severity of depression. Exploring the risk factors of depression among university students and promotingthe prayer and religious duties are necessary.
