Abstract
Title: The effect of listening to Holy Quran prayers on anxiety and vital signs before elective surgeries
Background & Objective
More than 60-80 percent of patients suffer from preoperative anxiety.
it seems, the religiouse beliefs have important role in anxiety prevention and it’s treatment.This study was performed to identify the effectiveness of listening to prayers on anxiety and vital signs before elective surgery.
Methods
This is a single blind, double group clinical trial. 64 patients who were scheduled to undergo an elective general surgery, randomly assigned in two groups of pray and control groups. The patients were neither aware of random assignment process, nor the existence of control groups. The study settings were surgical wards.
Subjects in intervention group listened to holey Quran’s pray without its musical tone (Tartil) for 15 minutes by Mp3player with head phones at preoperative night. control group received no intervention by the head phones. Spielberg’ s Anxiety scale is used before and after intervention in two groups and vital signs were measured too. Patients who had high level anxiety were excluded from the study. Data were analyzed with spss (v.18).
Results
There was a significant difference between listening to holey Quran’s pray and state – trait anxiety level in turn with (p=0.016, p=0.003), so that prayer group experienced less anxiety level. These patients had significantly decreased respiratory rate (p=0.014), systolic blood pressure(p=0.00) and diastolic blood pressure(p=0.001).
Conclusion
Listening to the holey Quran’s pray effects on preoperative anxiety and vital signs control.
